The Son truly entered human life through Mary, but He did not begin there. The eternal Son who shared the Father’s glory and love willingly became human, entered our world, and came to save us.

Who is the Word?
In John 1, ‘the Word’ is not described as only a spoken message or a plan in God’s mind. The Word was with God, was God, created all things, and then became flesh and lived among us. As the passage unfolds, Jesus Christ is named and the unique One beside the Father makes Him known. English translations differ at John 1:18 between ‘unique Son’ and ‘unique God,’ but either reading preserves the central movement: the Word who was with God and became flesh is the One who reveals the Father. It is like a story introducing someone by a title and then making the identity clear as the story continues. This comparison explains John’s unfolding presentation; it does not settle every possible meaning carried by the title ‘Word.’

The Word already was
John distinguishes what already existed from what came into being. The Word already was in the beginning, was with God, was God, and made everything that was created. The Word then became flesh.

Glory and love before the world
Jesus speaks to the Father of the glory He had beside Him before the world existed and the love the Father had for Him before the foundation of the world. Jesus is describing a real Father–Son relationship that already existed before creation.

All things were created through Him
The Son is not placed among the things God created. All things were created through Him and for Him. He existed before all things and continues to hold them together.

The One in God’s form took human form
Philippians follows one continuous subject: He existed in God’s form, emptied Himself by taking a servant’s form, became human, and humbled Himself to death. He was not forced to come. The Son willingly entered human life and gave Himself for us.
The Son did not begin when He became human. The eternal Son willingly came near, took our humanity, and gave Himself to save us without ceasing to be who He eternally is.
